Due to the overwhelming amount of questions from mcad folks, here’s the scoop on my current post-secondary education status. I hope this takes care of everyone’s curiosity.
As of friday, I am no longer attending MCAD!
Around may I decided to take summer classes with the intention to graduate early and proceed on to an MFA program for Art History or Museum Studies (since my ideal job is to become a museum curator). After some massive amounts of thought and many talks with my mother, I decided that having a BFA in Photography is not going to get me into the door for museum work, especially if I can’t go to grad school immediately upon graduation. So, I started applying to colleges, and ended up freaking out when I looked at all of the programs Rochester Institute of Technology (Rochester, New York) offers, which included a Museum Studies MAJOR, that I could supplement with an Art History minor. I applied and was accepted into this program.
About a month ago, my family and I went to visit RIT, fell in love with the campus, and found out that they were able to transfer all 90+ credits I had accumulated while at school at SFAI and MCAD. They even offered me an achievement scholarship and a grant. I accepted my spot as a RIT student.
BUT I did all of this at the beginning of August. Classes are starting now. I had no summer break to prepare for the move to NY, and we just got the final financial aid package two days ago (two days before classes start!) Because of the lack of time to plan, I decided to start school during RIT’s winter quarter (they’re on quarters, not semesters) which starts at the end of November, two days after Thanksgiving. Since it starts during MCAD’s fall semester, I am unable to attend classes in the fall. So, I get my summer break, but it’s happening in the autumn.
I am still working for Bill Cook in the first two weeks of school, but after that, I have no official business on campus. I’m still living on 3rd ave, but looking for someone to rent out my apartment, since I’d like to move back in with my folks to save the rent payments for my RIT housing. (Want to move in? Message me!) I’m so excited to be a part of this program, but I want all of my artsy folks to know that I am NOT GIVING UP PHOTOGRAPHY. I’m doing what I believe is right for my life, for what I want the rest of my life to be. And hey, it’s probably great for you MCAD folks too! Knowing someone who works at a museum can’t hurt your chances of having your work collected/shown!
I’m still going to as many free MCAD events til I move. I need to see all of my people!
